The NFL and Your Taxes - How to use the playoffs to make your accountant LOVE YOU!

It’ s that time of year again. Time to review your expenses, organize all of your receipts and prepare documents for your accountant. One year I made the ‘hand off’ to my CPA during the third week of March to which Ed replied – “what took you so long?” You could see the stress on his face – client files spread through out the office – and that years deadline was during Easter weekend. I felt his frustration and dedicated myself to helping to ease his pain. I accomplish that by turning my enjoyment for NFL playoffs into a constructive entertainment time.

The NFL playoffs are played on three consecutive weekends in January. You can couch potato the entire experience or turn your living room / home theatre ‘sports cave’ into a high def / surround sound tax preparation ‘sports work zone’.

I set up a card table 8 feet away from my Sony LCD, crank the surround sound to ‘game conditions’ and I get to work. I connect a full size keyboard and mouse to my laptop and type the symphony of facts and figures into Quick Books.

Important play? Stop work and enjoy the game. Your favorite team is playing on the screen? Push the accounting aside and enjoy the game. I have my refreshments lined up – saving adult beverages until the second half of the second game of the day. I quickly discovered two facts – I was enjoying my accounting preparations and there are a shocking number of TV commercials that you can work right through.

Getting into this grove will allow you to stay ahead on 1099 forms and kick off the New Year ahead of schedule. The best part is by the time Super Bowl week arrives you can walk into your CPA’s office, hand over your documents and watch their smile. In addition, you can really enjoy extra productivity and reduced stress in February and March while your competition is scrambling to take time away from their regular work to prepare their taxes.

The key to remember is that you do not have to work the entire time. Anything accomplished using this method puts you ahead of last years schedule. So you need to ask yourself: are you ready for “more than just some football?”
